A Quick Lay of the Land
SJU sits in the Isla Verde area of Carolina, just east of San Juan proper. The good news for most travelers is that the tourist neighborhoods are close. Isla Verde and Condado, where the majority of hotels and resorts are, are a short drive away, while Old San Juan is a little farther around the bay. Most arriving visitors are looking at a relatively quick ride rather than a long highway haul.
If you are headed somewhere farther out, like the east coast near Luquillo, Fajardo and El Yunque, or to the west coast, the drive could be an extra two hours longer drive and a planned transfer makes even more sense.

Rideshare
Rideshare apps operate on the island and pick up from a designated area at the airport. Pricing fluctuates with demand, so a late-night or peak-arrival surge can erase the savings. Cell signal and app behavior can also be spotty right as you land, which is exactly when you do not want to be troubleshooting.
Rental Car
If your plans involve a lot of independent driving, especially to the west coast or the central mountains, a rental car has its place. But for a trip centered on San Juan, a car is often more hassle than help: parking in Old San Juan and Condado is genuinely tight, and you would be paying for a vehicle that mostly sits.
What to Expect When You Land
- Baggage claim and the walk out. Like any airport, give yourself a little patience here. Bags take time.
- The curb is busy. SJU’s arrivals area moves quickly and gets crowded. Knowing your plan before you walk out keeps you from being swept along.
- Heat and humidity. You will feel it the moment the doors open. A pre-arranged, air-conditioned ride is a small luxury that lands differently after a travel day.
- Cash and cards. Puerto Rico uses the US dollar, so there is no currency exchange to deal with, but it is wise to have a little cash for tips.

- Decide before you fly. Book or at least choose your transport method ahead of time so arrival is a non-event.
- Have your hotel’s exact address handy. Some neighborhoods have similarly named streets; the precise address saves confusion.
- Travel in the daylight when you can. A first arrival is easier in daylight, though a planned transfer makes a night landing fluid and painless too.
- Tip your driver. Gratuity is customary and appreciated for good service.
