Here is a local’s breakdown to help you pick the dates that fit the trip you actually want.
The Short Version
- For the best balance of dry weather and manageable crowds: the spring shoulder season is hard to beat.
- For peak sunshine and festive energy (and peak prices): the winter high season.
- For lower prices and fewer tourists (with some weather risk): late summer into fall.
Now for the details.
Puerto Rico’s Seasons, Simplified
Puerto Rico is tropical, so it doesn’t have four seasons the way temperate places do. It has a warmer, wetter pattern and a slightly cooler, drier one, plus the all-important stormy season layered on top. Temperatures stay warm all year, generally shifting only modestly between the cooler and warmer months, with the coastlines being hotter than the mountains.
High Season (Roughly Mid-December to April)
This is the classic time to visit: drier weather, lots of sunshine, and a lively atmosphere, including the famous festivities around the holidays, which in Puerto Rico stretch well into January. The trade-off is that this is the busiest and most expensive stretch. Flights, hotels, and popular tours book up, so reserve well ahead. Around the holidays especially, plan early.
Shoulder Season (Roughly April to Early Summer)
For many travelers this is the sweet spot. You generally still get plenty of dry, sunny days, but the high-season crowds thin out and prices ease off their peak. It is a great window for the full island experience, beaches, rainforest, and the bioluminescent bays alike.
Low Season (Roughly Late Summer to Fall)
This is when you’ll find the lowest prices and the fewest tourists. It is also the wettest stretch and overlaps with hurricane season (see below). Rain in the tropics often comes as warm, passing afternoon showers rather than all-day washouts, so a wet season trip can still be wonderful, just build in flexibility.
About Hurricane Season
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with activity typically peaking in the late-summer-to-fall months. Most days in that window are perfectly fine, and direct storm hits in any given week are UNCOMMON, but the risk is real enough that travelers in this period should consider travel insurance and keep an eye on forecasts.
